Mathematics: Addition and Subtraction – Level 1

In this lesson, we will introduce the basic operations of addition and subtraction through the use of hands-on manipulatives. Students will learn to record simple multi-digit calculations (without regrouping/carrying or borrowing) in different ways, gradually progressing toward the standard algorithmic method. You will not only find a variety of suggestions for creating concrete learning materials at home and using them to move from hands-on activities to abstract operations, but we will also guide you through the entire learning process. This will be done through problem-solving situations that give meaning and purpose to these mathematical practices. At the same time, you will explore important properties of addition and subtraction, developing mathematical reasoning and understanding rather than relying on the memorization of mechanical procedures.
